Line keeps dropping-any clues?

Hi , When I log on to my computer it starts dropping the connection when I go into internet explorer, I suspect a rogue dialler somewhere as we can't call premium rate numbers from our phone(got caught before in one of those scams) I've run a scan with Mcafee and it comes up clean. Any suggestions as to get rid of this bug,as I do believe there is one. Thanks

If you're using dial-up to connect to an isp, then this: http://frank.gwc.org.uk/~ali/dacs/ may also be a possibility. Or it maybe that you need to get BT to turn up or lower the 'gain' (noise) on the line.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

Also, try to use spybot (free) or Ad-Aware (free version available) with their latest updates to scan your computer. In my experience, they are a lot better at catching spyware, adware and hijackware. Also try using HijackThis to pick out programs that are hijacking your computer.

Ensure that you are dialling the best number for your ISP. Contact them and ask. Many have different numbers you can call, and some give better performance than others.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers and take care.

  • I have recently moved into town from a village location and took my BT broadband option 1 package with me.

Whilst the broadband speed is now running at something like 4 - 5 Mps I have found that I now have the same problem that shrewdal has with the connection dropping off. I must admit that it is not doing this all the time the PC is turned on and connected but just occasionaly each day and I find it a little frustrating.

As I may suspect, it could be a noisy line, so I will contact BT today to rectify this for me.

If you are supposed to get up to 8 MB speeds but are getting different speeds when connecting then you should ask BT to cap your speed at slightly under the Max you connect at. I had to do this with UKOnline. I have thier 22MB package but can only connect at 13MB and have to have it capped at that or my connection randomly disconnects and when I reconnected the Down speed was always different.
  • Thanks sco0ter i'll try getting onto BT and get it capped
  • Phew - felt like pulling teeth!

Got thru to a BT call centre in India and the poor girl tried her best to help & answer me. All she was doing was reading off a menu on her computer screen so I felt it was a case of the blind leading the blind. But I think we may have a result even though I was on the phone to her for 22 minutes.

So far all is working okay with the broadband connection still on and I have left it unattended for at least and hour & a half. It will be interesting to see how it performs later this evening.

I looked at the BT BB self help pages and it did suggest that if I had a router instead of a SpeedTouch 330, it would reconnect to the service automatically after every time it drops off. Does anyone agree with that statement?

I have a similar problem. I moved into my new build home last October, but usually everyday from 6 - 9pm i get disconnected. 9 times out of ten I have to restart my PC if I want to connect straight away.
My ISP suggest its my usb modem and not a BT problem.

I have just been putting up with it.

    Any suggestions ?
