A malfunctioning or malicious add-on has caused Internet Explorer to close this

More information:

Windows Data Execution Prevention detected an add-on trying to use system memory incorrectly. This can be caused by a malfunction or a malicious add-on.

For the last few days the above keeps happening. I have just run SuperAntiSpyware and all it found were some tracking cookies, so I don't know what's going on. It's happening on all my regular, presumed totally harmless websites, including e.g. BBC news. Never had this before, and haven't downloaded anything new.

Any ideas please?

Try resetting IE settings Tools > Internet Options > Advanced (if IE8)

    Then Reset at the bottom.

You can slso restore advanced settings.

You could try disabling the IE add-ons (piecemeal) and see if you get the same problem. Failing that, dump IE and install Firefox (a myriad of add-ons, many of which provide you with safer browsing  )

Thanks for quick reply mluton. Not sure if I am on IE8 - how can I find out?

Just followed the path you advise, and next to the Reset box it says...

You should only do this if your browser is in an unusable state

    Presume it is safe?

Oh dear, afraid I don't know what you mean by "IE add ons" :o.

I already have Firefox as an alternative browser, so maybe I'll just use that.

Help/About will inform you of which version of IE.

Tools menu, Manage Add-ons. Try disabling all.

Move to Firefox. I would ;)
