In the market for a laptop

Hi guys and gals,
I have absolutely zero knowledge of all the techie info on sites when buying a laptop. I've been told what it all stands for but it kinda goes over my head. I have a little knowledge and know what I'm after, but I'm trying to get the best deal for my son for christmas.

I'm looking to spend £350 tops on a laptop that has a cd/dvd rewriter thing in it, that has as much memory as possible and pref with windows 7

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be most appreciative. You guys are always so very helpful! As I said I've looked at Tesco, John Lewis, Dell, Comet, PC World and the like, but the numbers and figures go over my head!!!!

The 4th one on this link should do, or the tihird one. Both the same price but one has a dual core processor one has a single core but it is faster.

The 5th one would be good if the budget has any elasticity.

Apart from burning DVDs what else does he want to do with it? You're going to have a fairly limited choice with a budget of £350.

  • Thankyou Bill :) What is the difference between dual core and single core processor? Going to have a look now to see, thanks :)

The only other things he does is homework and facebook!!! He is nearly 11 so senior school next year, so does need as good a laptop as i can get to last thru school, but my budget will only stretch to £350 :(

I think they mean wait for the Apple fan boys to turn up recommending a mac for £1000+, it always happens in threads like this
  • Oh right ok!!!! Sorry am at work with the phone screaming down my ear, up to paperwork and didn't understand! Yep I'm sure you're right! Sheesh, *if only* I could afford an Apple!

Dual core means the Procssor has two seperate cores so it's like having two processors in the machine. In theory that means it can spread the load over the two cores so it should be better. however software has to be written to use two cores and some isn't.

Personally, of the two, I'd probably go for the dual core.
