Fitting a car stereo

I want to put an old Goodmans stereo into my P reg Clio, i took it out of a Saxo.

I have taken out a Kenwood from the Clio, cos the display doesn't work on it and i can't get it to work at all, think the buttons are broke. I know the Goodmans one works though cos it was my old car i took it from.

Anyway, there's more wires in the car than there is on the stereo, but local shops want £25+ to fit it.... It can't be that hard, surely?? I begrudge paying that sort of money out for something i could have a go at myself...

Can anyone direct me to a guide of some sort which will tell me what all the wires are and where they should go? (if such a thing exists).

I did try putting the Kenwood back in but it didn't work, and some bloke up the street had a look at it so dunno what he's done

  • goto halfords with stereo in hand, work out what the correct part is, then look on the internet and get it for literally a few quid. Or try a breakers yard, it will be a case of just wondering round cars seeing what you can find.

where in the country are you based btw

    I'm in County Durham.

I've got wires attached to the stereo, i should take a pic really and see if anyone can help lol.

But my problem is that there's loads more wires in the car and i don't know where they need to go! Testing the radio leaving the wires unused didn't work either so i guess they all have a purpose.

    I'm wary of Halfords.

I assumed a 'technician' would fit my new stereo.

I got some spotty youth who was cack handed. Took him 5 mins.

    IMO, best do it yourself.

Well i couldn't get the camera on my phone to work earlier, so i went to one place while i was out and about and he was quite rude and said it "could" cost me £35+vat, but wouldn't commit himself to a figure and wouldn't even look at the car, just wanted me to book in for tomorrow, not knowing how much it'd cost.
This was a place that specialises in radio decoding and alarms and stuff.

So then i went to another place that specialises in general auto electrics, and he came straight out to the car, said it looked like a straightforward, less than 30 mins job so £20 inc vat.

The guy was lovely and it ended up taking him over an hour cos the wires had been snipped and he had to solder them.
He still charged me the £20 and i feel better knowing it's been done by a professional, as much as i'd have like to have done it myself and been MSE, i guess it wouldn't have been MSE when my dash caught fire :rotfl:
I wouldn't have been able to do it anyway judging by what he had to do, so saved myself loads of time and stress, it was worth the money!!

    Thanks!
