Renting for the 1st time, is there a credit check?

I am 37, always been crap with money but this year have decided to sort myself out.
I am on the verge of having an IVA sorted which will see off the £20k of bills and am planning on moving out of the family home at the end of next month when I have the rent and bond.
One question to you lovely helpful people, when I use an agency i.e Dawsons etc, do they perform a credit check?
I can get a reference from my boss to say I have worked in my job for the last 5 years and confirm my salary and can probs get a letter from my bank to say I have been a good boy with them in the 6 months I have been with them but the possibility of a credit check for this worries me.
Thanks for any replies.

Well, our agency said they were going to do this and that, and they didn't do any of it at all.

Bit miffed really as I chased about making sure they'd get perfect references and even checked my credit file. Mind you, they are Estate Agents, of course they don't do anything.

You'll be fine I'm sure, they're not so stringent, but it'll drive you up the wall waiting to hear I can tell you that.

I have read in quite a few places that credit cheks are performed for when you want to rent from an agency.
I have a good job and live in Swansea.
Is this any different from, say London where the rules are a little more stringent?

Most agencies that I have used have said they do a credit check, bank check, employment check and personal references.

I know they have done the other manual checks but never thought to bother to see if they did the credit check
