Every now and again a pop-up message appears saying install Java update. Can anyone tell me what is Java? I didn't know I had it! I use OpenOffice, free McAfee security.

It's a programming language, used in parts of some websites, elsewhere such as many mobile phones, and as fermi points out it's from the same stable as Open Office. When it's running on your PC, you might notice an icon like a steaming cup of tea or coffee on the tray part of your taskbar.0

Thanks redux for the explanation of what it does.fitzroy0

Also note that Java has nothing to do with JavaScript (they simply share the first four letters because of the strong-coffee-orientated enthusiasms and lack of imagination of the designers!).0
