Mpeg compatible?

I bought a new portable DVD player the other day and when I checked out it's specs I saw it was "mpeg compatible". What does this mean?
Does it mean I can play movies I have on my PC from a disc on the player?

Thanx

Heres the link to it.

I would say yes. You should be able to play Video CDs.

If it's MPEG 1 compatible then yes.

However MPEG 2 is the format used by DVD Video.

The link supplied to DVD player has expired. I suspect the product is a Ventura PVS1770. The closest Iinformation I could find is here.
These things can play DVDs (MPEG2), audio CDs and MP3 cds on CD-R or CD-RW according to the online manual in the knowledge section.

Some say as cheap as £99 at argos.

So it cant play mpg movies then?

    Thanx all.
  • VCD is mpeg 1 and SVCD is mpeg 2. Both can be ripped and burned on to regular CD-Rs using Nero.

Try both (for the price of a couple of blank CD-Rs). I would be very surprised if neither worked. SVCD is better quality than VCD.

    what I do:

play the mpg in windows media player.

While it's playing go to file/properties

If it says video codec: MPEG Video decoder

then I know it'll work in my dvd player

If it's being decoded by anything else, usually it won't work

Don't know about more recent dvd players though - may be able to decode more types of mpegs
