Prepayment meters
I know they apparently overcharge for electric...I have one anyway as I live in a rented flat. I recently had a letter telling me I have to get my meter updated as it may be giving an incorrect reading after a certan amount of time (it looks pretty new to me...anyway...). Does this mean I legally HAVE TO get it changed? Does anyone know what the deal is with new prepayment meters - are they still overpricing their leccy?

One, all electricity meters have an approved certification life after which they have to be exchanged and a supplier can obtain a warrant to do this if necessary.
When you say 'overcharge' I presume you mean it is charging you more that you should be paying rather than the fact that the electricity is more expensive. With the older token meters is required a site visit to charge the tariff and therefore numerous people ending up not paying enough when prices were rising or paying to much when prices are falling. All of these meters are being replaced with newer ones that allow 2 way communication using the payments device (card or key).IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Thanks Spiro... I haven't a clue about electricity prices tbh, I just keep hearing about prepayment meters costing more than having a quarterly bill.
My meter is a card one but I will call them to get it changed now I know I have to - cheers for the info.0 -

Don't believe all you hear
I know of one company that charges exactly the same no matter what type of meter you have and I am aware of another (one of the big 6) who charges less for a PPM compared to their standard pay quarterly on receipt of bill tariff."Now to trolling as a concept. ....
