  • Personally I never believe my bank balance on Sundays, as I know things maybe pending & might come out the next day. Often I don't even bother logging on on Sundays. (I check my online banking everyday)

Maybe try writing a letter saying what you've said in your post (a nice polite letter as they will probably ignore a rant) and see if they will re-instate your larger overdraft temporarily and cancel charges.

Max - Take a closer look at your bank statement. The funds that were showing on the Sunday are probably dated Monday (as expected). This often happens. You need to keep a better eye on what is happening with your account.

Try and get the charges refunded by all means, but you've cocked up - not them.

I don't need the larger overdraft because my account is in credit.

The letter states that my overdraft is £350 (the new one I had setup) and that my bank account was £565 (or their abouts) overdrawn.

my main dilemma is that they didn't send out the direct debit for my credit card

They didn't send it out because it was Sunday!
Which is why I never believe my statement on Sundays & don't think I have more money than I do!

  • Max, I don't think you have a case based on what you have posted in terms of bank error.

I don't think I've put my point across correctly. I would have not been in an unplanned overdraft if they hadn't let me cancel my £600 planned one, you can only cancel your overdraft when your account is in credit, my account was showing up in credit so I was able to cancel my overdraft and setup a smaller one.

What have the bank said about refunding the charges etc? WIll they agree to it?

It's always worth having a go - whether you think you have a "case" or not.

In my experience, banks normally cave in if you're tenacious enough. If he thinks he's been treated unfairly, then by all means complain, complain, complain.

For the sake of £35, I certainly would - and I'd escalate it further if refused. Someone somewhere will give up in the end and refund.

The basis I would go in under may well be that I have had no charges over the years etc, etc, rather than it's your fault cos you didn't tell me this. I hope that makes sense?
Likelihood that they would as a GOGW.

Yeah, unfortunately, balances checked on a Sunday cannot be relied upon for their accuracy.

The only way to be sure, is to keep a detailed tally of exactly what you have spent. I do this now, and I refer to my spreadsheet most times, as well as my bank account just to be sure. ie, my spreadsheet reminds me that my quarterly banking fee is due this month and so I need to ensure that there is at least 8.95 in the account to pay it. No such reminder available on the account.

Although, I do admit, it is easier with my Dutch account as 99% of the transactions are instant. The only delays I have noticed are for sending funds abroad.
