online curtain companies??

Hi,

We have moved into a new house, and the previous owners have unexpectedly taken all of the curtains

So we need to get some curtains relatively quickly, but don't want to spend out on readymades only to change them for made to measure later...

I was thinking about getting some online...and have had a look at some of the googled sites, and ordered swatches, but wondered if anyone had experience of them or could recommend others?

Thanks

I can't imagine why you would assume someone would leave their curtains unless you had arranged that. I've only ever left curtains if the buyer of the house has bought them from me.

I've not used either site you mention but have used both Laura Ashley & John Lewis without problems. They'll send swatches very quickly. I think both have an express service although at this time of year you may be in trouble with that.

I'm currently on the hunt for a few pairs of curtains so I've been looking around too, I did notice a company on quidco that had theirs half price plus 20% cashback. I'm waiting for some swatches. I believe it said they're part of the Hillarys Blind group. The prices did work out very inexpensive for made to measure. Will depend on the quality though.

[Btw Don't forget to use quidco for Laura Ashley or pigsback for John Lewis if you use them.]

Ikea is a good place for cheap plain cotton curtains that are long enough for most period properties. Most of my curtains needs to be 115"+ which is difficult to find in readymades. I have a few spare sets of curtains that cost only £11 each from Ikea. I use them when I fancy a lighter feel in the Summer or the main ones are at the dry cleaners.

Another great place is ebay, as always there are some real bargains amongst lots of rubbish.

The cheapest option could be to find someone locally to do it for you. I have just been quoted £250 to make up interlined curtains. I have already bought the fabric through ebay for about £120. The closest reasonable alternative was just under £600 from Laura Ashley. It might be worth asking around if you don't know of anyone.

Hi, sorry if I misled, but we did not assume. They had listed 8 pairs of curtains as included within the fixtures and fittings form. If they had only listed them as for purchase, then we may have done! We are currently trying to chase this, but in the meantime we are still curtainless...

Thanks for all of the ideas... I wish we had an IKEA as I know they can be great, but unfortunately ours is 120 miles away! I will have a look into local curtain makers, I don't know anyone who has used them recently, but will ask around...

    Thanks

If you're not fussy and need them quick, you can get them from charity shops and freecycle. They won't be in the greatest condition and might not be perfectly the right size but will be cheap and quick!

Ahh, well in that case you should be able to get them, but in the meantime do check out ebay. They often have IKEA curtains still in their packets. Or as the previous poster said freecycle is sometimes good (& you can put a wanted on to prompt offers in the right sizes) I seem to have a huge stash of curtains now but I remember having duvet covers up in my 2nd place for a few weeks until I got sorted. It didn't go down well with my neighbours, I think they wondered quite what they had living next door... :o
  • try terrysfabrics . they have everything under the sun and they will send you free swatches before you decide what to buy . i think they're brilliant . i always use them for soft furnishings
as for the seller , i wouldn't leave the curtains if i was to move house
