hi there,

This is my first post , have been lurking for a while.

I have just bought a second hand car (my first car) and have noticed a hole in the plastic cover of the headlights. The lights work, but do I need to get this fixed - its a small hole, smaller than 5p coin. If rain gets in will it stop the light from working? And how much would it cost to get it fixed? Is a honda concerto - g reg.

Also I've noticed a chip in windscreen, do I need to get this fixed and how much would it cost?

I don't have a clue about cars/costs etc and don't want to phone a garage to ask if these need to be fixed, as they will probably say they need to be fixed to make some money out of naive female.

Any advice much appreciated.

With the hole you can buy a set of sticky lens tape in halfords for the job, only cost £2-£3. Chips in windscreen i have heard cost about £25 from maybe autoglass or a windscreen company.

Depending on where the chip in the windscreen is,and how big it is.

If it's within the sweep of the wiper blade, and more than 10mm in diameter, then it's an MOT failure,I'm afraid, however, don't despair.

If you have windscreen cover on your insurance, then you may be eligible for a windscreen repair from one of the big companies, without it affecting your no claims, and not having to pay an excess on your policy. You'll need to give your insurance company a ring, and say it's just happened, and what can they suggest.(That is assuming you have the aforementioned cover.)

    As for the headlight.

I'm guessing they are aftermarket covers to protect the actual glass,as I'm unaware that plastic covers were fitted to cars of that vintage, and if so,then AFC's suggestion is a good one.

    Hope this helps you.

if its just inside the sweep, fit a smaller blade(to miss it) for the MOT and there isnt a single thing they can do about it.:D

Thanks guys. You've put my mind at rest - I was expecting to have to pay a fortune to have these fixed!

I do have fully comp insurance bu didn't want to lose my no claims bonus for claiming for windscreen, so I'll have to check with insurers on that. Can't afford premium to go up anymore as already over £900 as new driver!!!!

Its not within wiper blade area so should be OK in that sense - will get myself down to Halfords pronto.

    Thanks again.

With the chip just wait for the next MOT and see if anything happens. If it does then Autoglass will replace windscreens for under £100.
    Happy chappy

Have checked the chip and it is within wiper blade, just behind rear-view mirror. If I fix it myself - will it be safe? I don't want to fix it and then it break when I'm driving or something.

    Thanks guys
