Router/internet problem

I need to go help someone whose internet via a router is not working, 1 desktop via LAN, 2 laptops via wireless.
All 3 PCs don't get internet, so I assume problem is either router or telephone line.
I don't know anything about routers, as I've always used DSL/ADSL modems.
He's been trying to sort out problem for weeks, has reset router, phoned tech support etc.
They get internet via TalkTalk & don't have any setup disk, not sure if one is needed.
What are the basics to checking & setting up internet via a router ?

find the web address of the router config page, log into router, check username, password, vci/vpi settings, use a wired connection. Check the pc's are gettings a local ip address from the router by doing an ipconfig from the cmd prompt, should be 192.xx.xx.xx or 10.x.x.x, unless that works, the internet will never work
Sometimes a personal firewall can cause problems, ie Norton, Mcafee, Zonealarm etc.
Sort out wired connection first then wireless.!!

Hi Jon539,
If the router being used is supplied by TalkTalk (Hg520 or D-Link) then the IP address to access the router settings is 192.168.1.1 the username and password are both admin. Your friend will need their username and password details. The username is theirtelephonenumber@talktalk.net (eg 0200123456@talktalk.net) their password will be detailed in the welcome documentation they received unless they have amended this. Could you also check at this point that the router is set to always on or idle time 0.
For basic testing the router should be connected to the NTE5 test socket (if available) or to the master socket if there is not a test socket available. Even without the computer connected to the router the ADSL and internet light should come on if there is no fault. If you have an alternative router or modem to test then this too can be set up with the correct username and password details to rule out any faults with the router itself.
Let me know if you need any more assistance or you and your friend could register and post at https://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums for us to take a more specific look at the problems.
Cheers
