Problem with modem connection

Since a thunderstorm the other night I haven't been able to use my own computor to connect to the internet.
It's an internal modem, I can hear it dialing the number, but then silence.
My wifes machine which is in the next room, is working ok and uses the same connections. The only difference is my wifes machine has a surge socket for the phone line but mine doesn't.
The machine was off during the thunderstorm, so could this still have affected it.
Today I have reinstalled the driver and software and checkd all connections and settings which all seemed correct.
Any help would be appreciated.

It does sound like it has been damaged. The tones that you can hear are from the modem to the distant end but perhaps it is now deaf and cannot hear the tones from the other end.
If you go into the modem properties, you may be able to select an option to create a modem log, which you could view after a connection attempt to see why it is failing to connect.
If it is dead you can get one for about a fiver.

Thanks for the reply, I will try what you suggest.
Also for the link, but I won't be buying one from Eclipse, as I have had some bad dealings with this firm. I will have a shop around and price a few first.
Thanks again.
