Hi Guys
DS is very sad because the PS3 that we brought for his birthday has stopped working. When he turns it on no icons appear. He has tried it with different games but non work. The PS3 was purchased in April this year. Has anyone had similar problems. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

No icons (e.g. game, viedo, music) just the coloured wave screen.

turn the console off, then press and hold the power button (on the front) until it beeps several times and turns on. it should auto detect the settings for the TV and display a confirmation prompt. this resets the video output settings and might fix the icons problem.0

maybe try loading up the restore menu and try restore files option?
though i would try loading default settings firstI found this after my mp3s went crazy on the ps3:
to reset video input:
1. shut off the ps3
2. press and hold the power button until system beeps twice (once for on, another for resetting video settings)
to get to the restore menu:
1. shut off the ps3
2. press and hold the power button until the system beeps twice AND turns off again
3. press hold the power button until the system lets out two fast beeps
Supported Features of 2.50 Recovery Mode
The current Recovery Menu supports:
- Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
- Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
- Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
- Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
- Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.0 -
and if the above doesn't work, try rebuilding the database from the recovery menu. it shouldn't delete any data from the drive.0
