the nikon that i bought actually went up in price over time (d40x) before they stopped making it. my advice is to find a good deal and buy it and then just look out for decent deals/sales on lenses. also take a look at second hand if it's your first. the body is only part of the story - the lenses are what make the difference. at the mo, nikon kit lenses (the ones that come with the bodies) are really good and people tend not to flog them - but you can pick up canon kit lenses pretty cheaply.
btw, although an older model, the nikon d40x is superb!
