ceiling repair

i am very clueless when it comes to many things but more so with ceilings. what makes a ceiling is it a plaster board?

if so the one in the downstairs loo and kitchen from the water above from the bathroom have split and come apart (like torn paper). the ceilings have had some sort of artex done to them. would it be easy to pull the broken boards down and then put new boards up? or is there something else we should do.

also the ceiling the bathroom has been painted and has chipped with the steam from the shower.

what should be used on the boards of ceilings? what do you think has happened here. or not as the case may be.

Ceilings are normally plasterboard which is a mineral board, covered with paper. Pretty easy to remove with the aid of a claw hammer, resulting in a lot of mess!

Putting up new boards isn't difficult, just needs a couple of people, one to hold up the board and the other to nail it onto the joists above. Then after that you will normally fill the joins with tape and skim plaster over it, finally paint over it.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

Sometimes it might be one plasterboard that came loose and so you get a split effect. We had a problem in our kitchen and i dreaded the mess that would be caused taking it down but our plasterer came up with a better solution.

He screwed the old plasterboard back up and then put new plasterboard over the top and now we have a lovely smooth ceiling.

As above ,you have two choices pull down the old boards and reboard (quite an easy job but very messy ) or overboard then skim .(plasterer needed)
you then need to buy some Kitchen and bathroom paint though which wont peel like normal paint .
