Don't know if this will be any use to you but:

"Before you can register and tax your vehicle you'll need to get a British insurance certificate using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) from your vehicle.
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) will be able to give you information on insurance brokers that provide this cover. You can contact the BIBA on 0870 950 1790 or by email:
    enquiries@biba.org.uk"

Also you could try these: They all say they insure for importing:

Only way is to trailor it once it comes off the boat so its not actually on the road till you have done all the VOSA checks and got it registered then insure it. But you will have to put it in a garage to make sure it doesnt get stolen damaged etc as it will have no insurance

Some insurers and brokers are flexible and will accept a VIN number to insure a car in the absence of a registration number.

I have the car in my garage as I have already taken delivery,
and have MOTd it,but as far as I know to register it you have to tax it at the same time hence the 'chicken and egg situation,

I should have made my first post clearer is that I only want short term cover as the car is 'sold on'

You will find brokers situated near Military based eg Catterick deal with imported vehicles on a very regular basis as they insure the military personels private cars when they return from postings abroad eg Germany.

To insure the vehicle they do what Vikingaero suggests which is to issue the cover on the chassis or engine number as this will remain the same when the reg number changes (You simply advise them when the reg changes).

If you contact a broker near one of these bases and explain you want short term cover they may be able to help you but will want to charge admin fees to cover the extra work you will produce for them (The Insurer will probably have a cancellation fee to)

How did you manage to MOT it with it not being registered?? As it needs to be on the database to MOT it as you need to put the reg into the computer?
