In my wisdom I offered to look for a cheaper TV for my dad who said he saw a 42" TV for £549.
Now I'm holed up with the flu/cold/chest infection and I really don't have the energy to do much, would you fantastic people be able to help me out at all?
Thanks!

Sure I can help.
Spent 3 days solid looking at LCD tv specs etc and by far the best deal you can get is the one on the currys website on the main page - LE40B620R. (Cant post link as it says new users cant ) :
Its 40 inch, 1080p so you future proofed AND has 100hz.
Its a great tv , 4 HDMI and 1 Scart and I love the usb port too.
Honestly Ive looked at lots and lots of websites and we settled on this nothing really can compare at its price range and features. Usually LCDs at this price range are either only 720p or not 100Hz.
549 pounds but if you order online and use code XMAS5 you get another 5% off making the total 521.55
They may say XMAS5 promotion finished but originally it was untill 26th I think of December.
Im actually going back to currys tommorrow to get 50 pounds back as we got it last thursday for 599 (was 699 in store) and price dropped to 549 (7 day price promise
)
Hope this helps been meaning to post this deal and youve given me a reason too lol
p.s. the picture etc are all excellent.0 -
Depends on what he expects for the money. What is the spec of the tv he has found?
Here is a starter from Amazon.

Thanks so much so far,
Can I ask one thing about Amazon - are they 'proper' retailers on there or are they individuals selling like ebay are?
Should have added - he wants it to be an LCD, not plasma.

Both Amazon and other companies, not individuals. Check who is selling specific items; Amazon "Dispatched from and sold by Amazon.co.uk." or another retailer via Amazon, e.g. "Dispatched from and sold by 123Electricals4Me"

Depends on how much you want to pay I would be surprised if you find a tv of the spec I posted especially with it being Samsung - if you let me know what size your looking for Id be happy to have a look for you online and find the lowest price and best quality considering ive spent ages last week going through it all

He liked the look of the £549 one so anything below that is a bonus - unfortunately the code doesn't work on the website anymore

I think he has saw the one you mentioned and thought it was 42" and not 40".

Any particular reason? If the main thing it will be used for is gaming or connecting up to a computer then I would probably do the same but if it is going to get used for general TV watching and films plasma is far better in my experience. (My experience was my 42in Panny Plasma sat next to my friends Sony Bravia LCD and the image was just so much nicer and natural on the plasma, even he agreed). There are a lot of myths about plasmas like them needing regassing, not lasting very long, using more electricty and screen burn. They are simply no longer true on a modern plasma.0 -
That is so funny, that is exactly his reasons... !
He's an old fashioned, stubborn to the hilt type of man so he won't believe me if I tell him otherwise. But I shall try!
What is the reason for plasmas being so much cheaper than LCD's then? (just wondering, some I have seen are <£100 cheaper)

They do generally use quite a bit more power. And if a white emblem was left on the screen for 2 days or more you can be pretty sure it will have marked it to a degree
And id hazard a guess the sony wasnt set up correctly:idea:0 -

Possibly because of the reasons I mentioned. LCDs have also got so cheaper because of the sheer scale of mass production on sizes below 50in. Above this you find the cost skyrockets and the availability plummets and Plasma is the norm.
Which ones have you got in mind when you say <£100 cheaper, the panasonic X10s are around £649 ish i think? which is a little more expensive than most 40in LCDs available.0
