Verify copied file/folder is an exact match

Is there a simple way to do this when copying files/folders from one HD into another or from HD to CD/ without actually running the file for a test. Thanks for any help.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

There are dedicated programs, one of which is called 'nocopies' or 'nocopys' but I've had no luck finding it via google. But there are also these:
