Heating problems, help please

we have an old baxi boiler and been told the valve (3 port valve) in the airing cupboard is broken, so the heating wont work but the hot water will.
we've had a friend's husband who owns his own business come in and he has given us a quote of £260 which includes a service on the boiler (£45), 2hrs work and has let us off the call out charge for being a friend the valvue itself is £100 plus vat. when he came to look at the problem he had estimated £150 as he was hoping to get the valve for £70. which we could of 'just' afforded but £260 is beyond our budget. the service needs doing as the boiler hasnt been serviced for 3yrs, british gas wont touch our boiler cause its baxi so we cant have the maintenance service and we've been advised to get some more quotes.
so
my DH vaguly remembers being told (by someone else) its the motor which has broken and has had a quote for £15. he also had a quote for the whole unit and has had a quote for £90.
so do we A) get the motor and hope its just that that needs repairing or
get the whole unit

thanks david, this was one of the places on dh's list to ring (not sure why he didnt will get him to).
we have seen one on ebay brand new in packaging. would you advise to try?0 -
Dont bother, free p&p with SF0

we have one round the corner which is even better. its only because the one on ebay was bidding so there would be a slight chance we could get it for even less than £39 but thats a great price compared to £90 i've just rang DH to let him know.
we just need to find someone to fit it now. and the service for the boiler of course0 -
just had a look on the screwfix website and our system is a honeywell and the honeywell motorised 3 port valve is £79.99 the only one i can see near the price you said was a horstmann for £29.95 from £41.99 would this work with our system? the others (siemens, drayton and danfoss) go from £54.850

The horstmann is fine, does the same job.0

just the answer i was hoping to hear thanks!0

If it's a Honeywell valve and the motor in it has gone, you can buy just that bit. Changing it is simple in that case, the valve part of it stays in place so no need to drain the system, you just remove the motor part and replace with the new one, if your OH can wire a plug he should have no problems (don't forget to switch off the electricity first!)
here is one:

thanks keith, thats the problem we're not sure if it is 'just' the motor which has gone.0

IIRC if the motor fails the valve goes to the HW on, CH off position which is what you have. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0
