I've just knocked down an internal wall separating our bathroom and upstairs toilet with the intention to bock up the old doorway to the bathroom and make it a bigger bathroom.
The wall have had all the tiles and wallpaper removed and are pretty uneven so I got a builder in to quote for blocking up the door and plastering/skimming the walls and ceiling to make my job of tiling and paiting a bit easier. He would also be skimming the other side of the new wall that forms part of the upstairs landing
Below is the quote...it's a bit higher than I was expecting but I have no idea if it looks fair? I live in Berkshire and the room is 1.7m x 2.5mx 2.4m (W x L x h)
Repair and re-plaster of bathroom. The quote includes the blocking up of the door way as discussed and the flattening recess above the bath.
Ceiling and walls to be bonded and skimmed to accept tiles and decoration as required.
Price including labour and materials – £900.00

Good morning: my OH has a customer who is paying a plasterer £550 plus VAT to plaster a bathroom similar size to yours (after the tiles have been stripped so down to the brick in spots) but no blocking up of doorway.......this is in Surrey.

That quote seems very non descript, question, is he going to plasterboard the new wall on a timber frame rather than use blocks. Not necessarily a problem but be careful if that is the case especially if the new wall will form part of a shower cubicle or something. If it is make sure he uses aqua board on the side that will be getting wet. I always provide a detailed written quote with details of materials to be used and a breakdown of costs, (within reason) If he is good then this will not be a problem. Secondly as I always say, be very careful of using sites such as my hammer or rated people etc. Basically the only people that make money are the sites themselves and you, the customer end up with a workman that is the cheapest not the best. Think for every other purchase you make you will look for value for money, in the case of builders the value is our skill.0

Hi, im a plasterer by trade, the job you describe should take two days,
Lets allow 200 per day for 1 tradesman plus labourer, giving us £400
materials should not be more than £250, based on the assuption that the
old doorway will be studded using timber rather than blockwork. total should then be less than £700, but as always you should get at least 3 quotes, hope this helps.0 -
Thanks for the replies...
I have requested a breakdown of the costs as I also thought it was a bit ambiguous plus I also have another builder coming round this evening to provide another quote...if it is similar then I simply don't have the money to get the job done so I'll have to give it a go myself! :eek:0
