Home Phone and Internet Not Working

Since 9pm Sat night my house phone has not worked and has had a lot of interference noise on the line and it kept ringing every so often but would only ring once and then go off and in the end I unplugged it as it was constant through the night. Sunday morning still not working and still could not connect to internet I phoned Bt using my mobile via the say no to 0870 numbers I had saved on my mobile, eventually getting through to a line that was still available, the engineer told me it was £120 call out fee if they found it was my phone at fault which I told the engineer I was not willing to pay. Anyway I took the bottom part of main socket in house and plugged the pc into that and it worked great for about one hour but phone was still not working. Today the phone is making less interference noise and it is possible to hear someone on it albeit only just but I still cant connect to the internet. Has anyone any ideas without paying Bt to come out and I dont know anyone who has a phone to borrow to test. Thanks in advance for all replies I get.

You only pay BT a call out if the fault is upstream of the master socket, it's standard practice to warn you of this if you report a fault. If you have plugged into the BT test socket behind the master socket faceplate and the fault remains, then it's down to BT (assuming your handset is not faulty). If you really can't borrow a handset (friend, neighbour, five minutes loan?), then get one in Argos for under a fiver.
Sounds like classic case of water getting into the line, or a bad connection, if there is severe noise on the line then your BB will not function either.
Als worth unplugging your router and ADSL filter and recheckng the phone line.
Also try the BT quiet line test, dial 17070 and select option 2. Do this from the test socket again. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Hi Ianjamie7,
I'm sorry for the problems your facing with noise on your line. If you like you can email me at btcare@bt.com including your account details so that I can run some tests and get to the bottom of this issue.
I'll look forward to hearing from you soon.
All the best,

Thanks for your replies about my phone and internet problems.
Anyway last Thursday I decided enough was enough and phoned up Bt and they said they would come round the following day which was last Friday which they did. One of the engineers who came round was my son`s stepbrother which put my mother at ease straight away because in this day and age you never know who is going to knock on the door. Anyway after a few checks they spent over one hour doing something to the line which is 100 yards down the road at top of a huge post which I could never do, apart from being rubbish at that sort of stuff, I can`t stand heights. After spending over 90 minutes here the job was done and it didn`t cost a penny as it was not the phone but when my mum asked how much it would have cost I was quite shocked as I knew about the £120 call out fee but they also charge £90 per hour as well if the fault is not theirs which I was not told when I phoned Bt last Thursday. Anyway the next time I went to use the phone the crackling was still there so I went and got a brand new phone from Argos and that is working fine but I cannot get internet connection which I couldn`t get after the phone line was repaired. The only way I can get on the internet now is to take the phone out of the socket and just have my Pc connection in socket and it works fine.
Has anyone get any ideas? Sorry for such a long post but I hope I have made myself clear as possible to help out anyone who may have had it happened to them and they have the answer for me.0 -
Do you have the broadband adsl filter fitted. It plugs into the main socket and then the router and phone plug into it.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

And if you already do have a filter, then it's died. Replace it with a new one. Every active extension in your house must be filtered, this included any Sky boxes connected to the phone line.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
