squeaking noise from drivers side wheel, helpppppp

Im getting a high pitched squeaking/poss scraping front the drivers side of my 2001 Astra (53k) , it only seems to be a low speeds under15mph. I cant really hear it at higher speeds, it increases pace from 0 -10 mph. Its only developed this evening when i went out earlier, im not sure if the temp of -1.c has anything to do with it??

Any ideas peeps? last thing i need before Christmas :mad::(

Car had full dealer service in July, new front discs and pads, cambelt and water pump, its well looked after.

    Raise the front wheel and turn it by hand, see if you can replicate the noise, and identify it.

    I had a noise recently when I looked into it, it was the splash guard rubbing against the disc, simply pulled it away from the disc problem solved.

    I wouldn't think it will be anything serious if you have just had them replaced maybe a stuck stone or bent heat sheild as already posted.

    Is it more noticeable going around corners? If so, it's probably just the wheel bearings.

    Grab the wheel and try moving it. If there is significant play in the bearing,get it foxed. Brake pads?...is there any meat left on them/do they work? If all is well,its probably just dirt or a rattly anti chatter shim. Just turn the radio up.

    you would hope so, but usually when my car comes away from the garage it comes out with a problem it didnt go in with, this is probably down to my experience of shoddy vw quality and their dealers
  • well it seems to of dissappeared ! went out to go to work at 7.30 and not squeaking.

    Im have to wait till after work to see if it does it again , very strange :think:

    Prob just dirt caught under the discs. For piece of mind but some brake cleaner to spray in if it starts again, see if it solves it immediately.

    However don't mess around with the brakes, especially in this weather. Check (or have checked) the brakes if this problem re-occurs. Many garages will do a free brake check for you. Especially check the pads for any sign of heat damage, wouldnt be uncommon for a sticky caliper piston to be holding your pads on.

    Damp in the morning was probably preventing the noise.
    Check brake pads make sure they are not worn. Probably a build up of dust and lack of lubrication.
    You might solve it by removing the pads, cleaning out the dust as much as possible with compressed air, putting some copper grease on the back of the pads (not the braking surface) so the grease is between the pad and brake caliper piston and reassembling. The grease dampens out the vibrations that cause the squeak.
    Also be sure the pistons are not sticking and the brakes binding. You can tell this by seeing if the wheel spins freely when you jack it up. A bit of contact and a quiet scraping noise from pads and disks at very slow turning speeds is compeltely normal, air flow at speed makes the pads and disk seperate.

    You may be able to free up a stick caliper piston by clamping it in a vice to force it back.
