an alternative to going out...a DVD of a theatre performance

Options
We've just bought my sister a DVD of Dr Faustus for her English course at school - and it's a recording of a theatre production - (we haven't received it yet because we only just paid for it online, but there are clips of it on YouTube - (I'm not allowed to post a link as I'm new, but if you go onto www. stageonscreen .com you can see them there as well....so we've seen what it will look like)...but I was thinking, it would be a really good idea to watch a DVD of a play instead of going to the theatre - I get really depressed with this weather at this time of year, so sitting in with a hot chocolate and a blanket just watching a DVD of the theatre seems like a far better idea.
It only cost us £20 for the DVD and although I love watching plays/musicals at the theatre, we went the other month and for 4 of us cost us just over £150.

Has anyone else bought this DVD yet? They're also selling another DVD on their website called The School for Scandal - I saw a few clips on youtube for those as well - you might have bought that one instead.

Good idea though, especially if the play has finished being performed at the theatre.
Thought I'd better share it with you as it's a money savings tip :)

I think lots of people will like the idea of seeing the theatre at home but i'm sure the figures show that cinema audiences are rising despite video shops being so common.
It seems that going out for the night will always be important.

  • Yeah, I suppose - I see your point.
For my sister though, this is perfect, as the play is no longer on at the Theatre so at least she can still watch it.
Also - I'm sure the play is pretty difficult to understand so there's the bonus of pausing it.
It just saves money at the end of the day I suppose - as a student I'm always looking for cheaper options for everything!
  • I actually got one of the Stage On Screen DVDs of Dr Faustus. The teacher pack isn't cheap, but compared to a theatre visit for a whole class it's very good value and it really does the job of communicating the play andmaking it enjoyable. Plus there are a lot of extra teaching resources in it.
