Hi Fi System with CD Multi Changer

My husband currently has a much loved Sony Music System which I bought him for our first Christmas together some 20 years ago. I would really like to buy him a replacement (and something which is much neater than the current one)

It's a very traditional one - made up of individual components, double cassette deck, turntable, radio and 5 disc CD changer and at the time cost a whopping £600 which was an absolute fortune then!

I'm not precious about it being another Sony but the thing he is really fond of is the 5 disc changer - are these really a thing of the past? I know most people now just have an Ipod dock (I bought him an LG one last year for Christmas which is great) and I don't mind if it has an Ipod dock also but I know he would be looking for a multi CD and a DAB radio.

The current Sony system still works perfectly well but I'd just like something smaller- wasn't looking to spend any more than say £400 which may seem mean given my £600 all those years back but we don't use it enough now to justify much more than that.

Advice/opinions much appreciated.

Thanks

If your after sound quality (And id guess you are from what you say) youd be best avoiding cd changers as they come at cost to quality.
Also, 600 quid was a hell of a lot for back then so 400 quid would probably be quite a step down!

Have a look at somewhere like Richer Sounds, especially their Clearance section and you might get a lot more for your money than from somewhere like Currys.

If it isn't broke then don't try to fix it.

Sony also did a Multi CD unit I think you could ut about 100 CD'd in to it.

not once, all 5 work perfectly - as I said there isn't anything wrong with it really but I wanted one that took up less space and looked a bit smaller (it's a girl thing!) Maybe I should leave well alone though - I guess it's not going to be comparable now with what I got then. Maybe I could just hide it behind a piece of furniture and I wouldn't see it (it does have a remote control so you don't need to get to it once you load the discs

Unless you are prepared to pay a lot, or go down a different route (digital music), then maybe hold onto it.

You can get some smaller 3-disc changers, but the commonest form was the 6-disc cassette by Pioneer (and others), I had one in my last car, I do miss it, but my current car can play MP3 CDs and has an iPod dock; things just move on. Sony and other makes had a larger 5 or 6 disc circular plate (which I suspect is your current model).

You could just look at a decent smaller hifi, such as a Denon, TEAC etc, with an iPod dock. Or maybe a dedicated digital component like a Brennan JB7 which can store 5000 CDs.

A quick look through a good Hi-Fi mag in the newsagents will give you some good independent advice.

If money is no object then the B&O BeoSound 9000 multi-disc tower is pretty fine!

Its his toy so I'd leave it well alone otherwise he might want to trade in something that takes up less room :D

good point - there are other things in his life which could certainly do with streamlining so perhaps better to let sleeping dogs lie.

Made me smile remembering back to when I bought it - it was so expensive and we were newly married and pretty skint so I could only afford to buy 1 cd - it was about 18 months before we had 5 cd's to fill the changer :rotfl:

My Sony RX70 is 10 yrs old, and still works other than I have lost the remote. Much better than my first CD stereo that ended up possessed and came on by its self about once or twice a month at random times for no reason at all. Woke me up with a start in the middle of the night cause the volume was quite high the last time I had used it.
