blue screen of death (again)

Hi My Dell inspriron 1501 running xp pro has developed the annoying habit of periodically giving the blue screen of death (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) error message. At first it would happen early in the morning (I suspected when AVG did it's morning scan). You guys suggested it may be a driver problem. I was able to manage the problem for quite a while by periodically winding my settings back to a point where it was working ok then a few days later it would start up again ( I blocked all microsoft updates in case it was an update causing the problem tho I was unable to stop the bleeding software distribution thingy from doing so). I also followed the malware sticky instructions just in case, nothing.
Anyway, now I am getting very frequent bsod's sometimes IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, sometimes saying it may be a driver or memory problem.
So how do I check the drivers for glitches? Then what is the best way to check my hardware (I have the manual and can take most of it to bits if neccessary).
I'd be greatful for some advice as Id really like to get it sorted out!
Lx.

If could be Spyware or failing memory (RAM) if the errors occur randomly - try Malware Bytes (link -: http://www.malwarebytes.org/) (for spyware test) and MemTest 86+ for a memory test (A bit more technical) (Link to Memtest 86+ http://www.memtest86.com/)0
