Cheapest place to buy a domain (not hosting)

Where is the cheapest place for me to purchase a .com domain from?
I am not interested in hosting as I do not intend to use the domain (at least, not for a few years), I just want to make sure no-one else can register it.
I am looking for a site which is: reliable, cheap to register, and easy to transfer out from at a later date.
Also, am I right in believing you can register a domain with one company and use another for hosting?
And if so, how does this work?

.com are cheaper in the US. have a look at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35
yes, you can register a domain seperate from a hosting company. in fact, it is better coz you are not locked in to one company.
how it works is you will need to configure your domain to point the hosting company. you will get all the relevant info when you sign up for your domain/hosting.0 -

Second 123-reg.co.uk - they may not be the cheapest but they are certainly cheap, excellent service and no hidden charges I have ever found. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

to be honest your wasting money registering a domain if you dont need it yet, if it hasnt already been registered its unlikely to be taken in the mean time, and even if it does get registered you can always use a different domain.
When it comes to hosting i would highly recommend streamline.net, for 45 quid a year you can get a .co.uk domain, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited space, and as many subdomains as you can use, plus a laod of other stuff such as 5 mysql databases
ive been using them for about 8 months and its been great service, plus, if they cant meet the unlimited bandwidth and space they'll give you a full refund.
you will find cheaper hosting out there, but streamline offer a great service and great packages for the price (this is the only place i could actually find u/l space and bandwidth)0 -

What about a name thats relevant to a new business venture and you need it before anyone else has it, then the above isnt relevant.

I have never been able to get my own name as an email address at yahoo, hotmail, gmail etc so I want to reserve the domain for my own potential future use before one of these other idiots with my name goes and takes it for themselves.
...there is even one other guy with my name who lives a few streets away!
Couldnt you just change your name to something unique?
