Second had car tips

Hi all,

Just got my 2001 Honda CR-V from service and apparently it cylinder head is worn out and will cost £2800 to replace. The mechanic said it might be a good idea to get rid of the car. I was thinking of part exchanging it for another CR-V possibly a bit newer 2005/2006 model. My questions are:

1. How much can I expect as a part exchange for this car?
2. Any good dealer anyone can recommend? I stay in Bath. My friends have got cars from Bristol (the big one there, can't remember the name) and were pretty pleased with it. But that was years ago, are they still good? Any other good dealers?
3. I've heard everyone talking about haggling when buying a car, the problem is I'm terrible at it :o So any tips? The problem I have is how much do I bargain? When do I back off? What kind of price do you think would be a good deal for a 2005/2006 Honda CR-V with the part exchange
4. What kind of guarantee/warranty should I get with the car? What is the minimum?

Sorry for so many questions, but I know nothing about cars (apart from driving them ) so any help will be gratefully appreciated

This is the sort of person that makes annoy me a little...

These will be the sort of people wanting everything trown in: mud flaps, full tank of fuel etc. Want money off "cos no one pays the screen price".

These are also the sort of people who will slag a dealer off for selling a "duff" car etc and at the end of the day these are the people who want to palm their !!!!!! px off to us saying "Oh its a lovely car, it has full history" which really means its knackered and i havent looked after it.

You'd be surprised at the number of cars we get in PX that have faults. Quite serious ones too...!

    Rant over.

    ON a more helpful note:

The CRV changed shape late 2006, so you could get a good spec one. but you will be driving around in an old shape model. Weigh up how much extra you will need to find an 07 spec new shape.

And what in my post made you jump to this conclusion? You know what mate, you are exactly the kind of person who makes me sick, jumping to dumbass conclusions without having a clue

It's a money saving forum, I need to be informed before I go and buy a second hand car. I'm doing my research but getting mixed results hence want to pick peoples brains out here who have been extremely informative and helpful. Guess there is always a first. Get a life instead of jumping to conclusions :D

    So is mine :D

Thanks for the tip, I was drawn to the 2007 and later model as well (for different reasons), just it falls outside my budget. Was not aware of the different spec. Thanks for that will see if I can get a reasonably priced 2007 model :T Any tips on a good dealer? (at the risk of it having you throw another hissy fit :D)

The bit where you said it'll cost £2800 to put right, so you thought you'd just palm it off to a dealer like lots of people do when they're faced with a rather large potential bill...

Mate, you should be a mind reader, you obviously can read minds and that too through forum posts :D Mature people generally ask questions like 'Do you plan to inform the dealer about this?' instead of throwing a tantrum like a jackass. Keep that in mind when you grow up

and to be honest I've yet to see anyone or hear anyone ask "Are you going to inform the dealer..."

This is a forum mate, if you have a doubt over someones post, you ask. At least mature people do

    To clarify:
Get rid of the car i.e. the car has got a serious problem, get a new one and do something with this one
Part exchange: Get some money off for the car from the dealer if they find this worth their while

I spoke to the honda showroom, since it is part of the service centre I get my car serviced from and they said they would offer £1700 if the car was running, £1000 if not. If Honda considers paying £1700 for this car, I should get close to that from other dealers. Is that clear now? :D

And BTW, how can the dealer not know about the issues? They generally ask for all information like service history, service records and this issue is clearly mention on the service records. So I couldn't lie if I wanted to

    Can anyone join in?
The OP said in his first post that the mechanic said he should offload it ASAP, so Harveybobbles, that is a person in your trade.
I have had dealings with "the trade" and I know that they are no angels when it comes to selling a dodgy "motah".
If I had a nice sporty hatchback, and it was going to cost me a small fortune to repair, then I would offload it quickly, as would any sane member of the public.

Oh, by the way, a worn cylinder head would not cost me nearly three grand to sort out.

This was quoted by the Honda garage, they always charge a bit more. Not sure how much this work should cost

I've had bad experiences with local garages (including me selling my previous motah for £50 to a local garage) and I've had no complaints with the Honda service although I agree they are overpriced.

Do you think I should get another quote? How much do estimate it should cost?
