HSBC Late payment fee

I recently have been charge a £12 late payment fee on my HSBC credit card.
The payment was due on Friday 21st nov but I didnt pay it until saturday morning
the 22nd, the acutal payment took 4 days to go thorugh, I have tried speaking the
HSBC depmartment for interest and charges twice, one woman fobbed me off and said she could not raise a complaint and gave me 2 phone numbers that gave unobtaibable dial tones and the second woman insited that i had to pay it.
How do I stand with this late payment. Is it enforcable by the bank. I can send a letter to the HSBC complainst department, but how do I stand interms of paying of the balance and refusing to pay the £12 late payment charge. I generaly pay of the credit card each month and keep the balance I owe very low.

Can anyone give any advice.

You didn't make the payment on time so they have the right to charge you.
  • I would suggest that you just apologies and try and get someone to refund it as a gesture of goodwill. It will be in your t&c's that if you pay late a late payment fee of £12 will be added.

Also is it worth trashing your credit file for £12?

Unfortunately they are right to apply late charges - after all you were late maybe just by a few hours. Usually, if it is a one off then you are usually "pardoned" and the fee refunded. Maybe call again and asking politely will help. Not paying late fees will only attract interest and you will definitely lose more than £12.

Why on earth would you raise a complaint.
You were late paying, you were later than you think, although the date was
21st your t&c will probably say 'allow 3 or 5 working days for your payment to reach your account' so even if you had paid it in on the Friday you would still have had a late payment charge.

If its your first offence, then grovel and ask for a bit of leniency but otherwise
you will just have to suck it up I'm afraid.

And remember to pay it in early next month. They wont refund you again.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

It's best to have a direct debit set up to take at least a minimum payment. This ensures that you will never miss a payment.
