Pass Plus scheme

I was just looking into ways of lowering my insurance costs ( ) and ive come across the Pass Plus website. I always throught that it had another test at the end of it (took me long enought to pass the basic driving test) so Ive rejected it without looking at it before.

But there is no test :j
There is no test at the end of it – your driving will be continually assessed and you must successfully complete all the modules in the course to an achieved or exceeded standard:

* achieved – successfully reached the standard required for each of the competencies
* exceeded – exceeded the required standard for each of the competencies

Has anyone done it and can give me the where all about it?

I haven't done it myself but its all about the driving that you didn't do in your normal test. This means that you will be driving at night, on motorways, bad weather conditions etc....

It'll cost you £100 (last I knew), which isn't bad as it may save you more than that in your first years insurance alone.

If you've got the £100 I'd go for it.

  • Hi, I did pass plus about two years ago and my insurance company at the time gave me an extra years no claim bonus so in my eyes was worth doing. I completed it with the same driving instructor I had that I passed my test with and at the end of teh required hours he completed test paperwork to say I had passed.

You might also want to consider taking a Skills for Life course with the Institute of Advanced Motorists - these courses are fab value for money, and as well as possibly helping to lower your premiums if you pass the test, they will actually make you a safer driver! I'm doing one at the moment and would recommend it to anyone - it's totally achievable, great fun and gives you real confidence to deal with all sorts of situations.

Maybe in a few years, it took me 2 years and 5 tests to pass this one ;)

Hi Kizzy! First of all, well done on perservering and finally passing the test! My DS did the pass plus course last year (took him three goes to pass driving test) and thought it was well worth doing it soon after passing - it hones skills you'll definitely need during your driving career, and doing it fairly soon after taking the test means you're less likely to have developed any bad habits to be corrected;) . Must say it put my mind at rest about him being safe on motorways etc etc. The reduction in insurance is a bonus, too. I say go for it!

Don't forget though, not all insurers give a discount for PassPlus so it may not benefit you. Other ways to lower your insurance are:
Don't stick down 20,000 miles cos it's a nice number. Lowering your miles per year will reduce your insurance.
Get your job right on the quotes as it affects it.
If it's parked on the street at night and Grandma lives round the corner and has a drive / garage, park it at Grandma's it'll bring it down.
(dunno how old you are) Put your mum on the insurance as well, always brings it down even if she never drives it.
Get an alarm / imobiliser on it (Thatcham approved)
