I contacted British gas, and was told they do not send out text messages to customers,
Well thats not true as I often get texts from BG advising me to go online and give a meter reading before im due a bill to avoid estimated bills.0 -

I know. My mind boggles. I can sort of understand random people passing on chain emails, even though I think they're easy to spot to the reasonably intelligent man in the street. But a newspaper? Just goes to show how and why our local press is in trouble!0 -

But it's not only newspapers that have passed on that PDS "warning". Trading Standards departments, police forces, Community Watch and even the Isle Of Man Post Office have been guilty of spreading this chain email without doing a few basic checks. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -

Really? I've had a few that say "trading standards say" but I took that as the sort think people pepper hoaxes with to make them seem plausible.0 -
I work for United Utilities in the gas and electric metering department and the text (part of a trial we were conducting) would have been sent by United Utilities on behalf of British Gas in an attempt to arrange confirmed appointments with customers. This was an attempt to try and improve the service given to customers by cutting down on the number of missed appointments.
Normally the customer would have already received a letter advising that a meter exchange was being arranged and requesting the customer to call in for a confirmed appointment..
Meter renewal dates are the latest date that a meter should be exchanged by and meters can be exchanged before that date at the request of British Gas0
