Surely it would be cheaper to removed the bannister, a even if it causes some damage, its going to be cheaper to repair the plasterwork than lose the cost of the bed?

PS are you sure you want a superking in a new build 2 bed? I have a superking, i love it but it is a seriously big bed!

you say your in a new build and can't fit the 2 halves up the stairs due to lack of space, so how would you have got a double or kingsize base up the stairs if these don't fit? if your room is big enough to have a 6ft by 6ft 6inch bed in it then it doesn't sound like it's a small house? I'm confused!! lol
Maybe it would have been an idea to mesure the one in the showroom before rushing ahead and ordering. and when you ordered had you already measured the gap in which it had to pass through?
Anyway, hope you get it sorted but Bensons arn't renowned for being lenient with refunds xx

A double would normally come in two halves that are 4'6" x 3'1 1/2"

A king size would normally come in two halves that are 5' x 3'3"

I am confused as surely the fact that you were buying a Super Kingsize, it would make sense that it wouldnt be two single beds that made it up. If it was two singles would this not make a king size.

Also, are Super Kingsize beds all approximately the same size (give or take a cm or so?)

King size beds are 5' wide, and a standard single bed is 3' wide.

All superking size beds are the same size (although some have bumper bars added, and some bases are deeper than others).

The problem the OP had was that they were told that the bases came as two singles. But they were 3" longer than a standard single as a single is 6'3" long, and a king size or superking size is 6'6" long.

Some divan bases come split head to toe, but other come split side to side.
  • Just thought I'd update you all as you've been so helpful. I fought our case for another day, admitting that we should have gone away and measured up first but arguing that this was not mentioned to us (which would have been courteous) and that we were mis-informed about the general size of the bed bases.

Eventually they agreed to deliver a kingsize, refund the difference between the two beds and headboards (£150) and as we need delivery ASAP they are giving us one with drawers in FOC (£100) and delivering it on Friday.

So, very impressed with the solution. A lesson learnt for all as they have agreed it would have been good business practice to warn us but we also should have been careful. Their customer service still leaves a lot to be desired but the saleman and store manager handled the whole thing very well.

So, let's just hope when it arrives tomorrow that it fits (we're sure it will but not sure how you can ever be 100% until it does) and that everything is OK! Fingers crossed!

    Hi Pigeonwood
Just a thought after reading this thread.
Most makers of beds can reduce or add in multipules of 3''/7.5cm to length of the bed.
Hopefully that would be enough to get the bed that you want up the stairs without removing bannisters or damaging plaster work of the wall.
I know there would be an additional charge to do that but maybe a middle ground could be found in cost of reducing the size of the bed.

They obviously realised that they probably wouldn't win in court.
