Anyone else had probs with avg link scanner?

Hi folks,

My computer was taking ages to load pages (on broadband) and It has been a lot better since I have disabled the link scanner on avg free 9.0 antivirus.

The link scanner checks out sites to make sure they are not on a list of malware sites at avg but to be honest was really slowing my computer. I have mcafee site advisor installed anyways so I don't need the link scanner.

To disable it go to advanced options on avg. It is installed by default.
Anyone else had probs with this?

thanks

yes, i used to disable it from being installed back when i used AVG.... since then I've moved on to avast as AVG seems to have fallen behind on both compatiblity/ease of use/nuisance factor and failure to detect an increasing number of viruses.

    definitely recommend swapping it out

This is one of those that you should definately stop, if you use online email like gmail and hotmail it is not even an issue as the big boys in that field virus scan your mail by default, and you actually have to click on attachments there to open them.

    http://hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/dasp/ua_info.asp?pg=virusprotect&_lang=EN

The virus scanner is only of use (limited) if you extensively use Outlook, and then only if you open every random piece of crap that anonymous people send you :p

PS. Most email attachments from outlook require you to open them, so simply turn off the automatic cpu killer that is AVG scanner, update your program once a week at least and manually scan them by right clicking if you have a suitable program installed :)

Contrary to Sparhawke's advice I would STRONGLY recommend you do keep using AV of some description. onaccess scanners are useful (critically so if you use USB sticks/drives to transfer anything from other people's computers).

I never said remove it completely, just turn off the email scanner and use it when you want to ;)

Why are you suggesting turning off the email scanner though? its the LINK scanner thats causing the problems

you should also aim for daily AV updates -viruses move exceptionally fast these days

Oh, I got it wrong...I was looking at another topic that had email in it and my mind got sidetracked...have you ever had that when you were thinking something a moment ago and then do something else but keep carrying through with the actions of the old like putting your cup of tea in the fridge and trying to drink the milk? :p

yes no worries.... we're just making sure OP doesn't turn off the wrong thing and end up with viruses :)

I disabled the AVG 9 link scanner for exactly the same reason.
