I found a couple of childrens books in Borders yesterday - 20% off - came home and found them on Amazon for half price with free delivery

  • we have visited the store in speke liverpool tonight, with 2 voucher cards. mine has £27 remaining on it and my 12 year old son has a card with £30 on it. only to be told no matter what we bought they have "no legal obligation to honour these cards" and they would take half of our transaction off the card and we would have to pay half cash!!!!!..... what a rip off ..... my son said "they r just trying to make money out of us mum!" out of the mouths of babes!

i would like to know where we stand legally, nowhere on the card does it say if the administrators r called in that the card would worth half the value, or if it has £30 on it , its going to cost u another £30 to use it !

and where does mr borders expect a 12 yr old to get £30 from?????

    1. It's been known for months that Borders was in trouble. Either you have had plenty of time to spend the token or the giver should have known it would be dangerous to buy a Borders token rather than a universal book token.

    2. You are being treated more than fairly by the administrators. If you don't like it don't use the tokens and queue up with the other creditors and pursue them through the courts where you will be legally to entitled to a miserable 7p or 17p in the pound.

    3. You have the opportunity to purchase £136 (at least) of books for £57. If you don't like it give the tokens to someone who does.

Only rarely was Borders in Preston ever cheaper than the WH Smith a few doors away. Even their half price offers were often undercut by Smiths. However, staff were always pleasant and helpful and there was a really nice Starbucks upstairs, that's the thing we will miss rather than the book shop itself! If Smiths was bigger and had a better range we would probably have never gone into Borders at all, I do feel sorry for the staff though. :(

    kim i'm confused

how can they purchase £136 of books for £57?

the books are only 20% off

how do you get £136 down to £57?

    doesn't make any sense

I know you have to double up on the purchase
but Paperchase took mine,so I am guessing that
the Game concession instore may take them,
if you cannot find enough books.
I used mine up in Speke too

Borders Preston yesterday was honouring Gift Cards to their full value though I was told that they had previously been on the 50% redemption thing. I was also told, when I phoned before visiting, that I should get there quickly - presumably before the administrators changed the rules again? I was lucky, I got some good stuff at some good prices.

Total paid to Borders is £114 but the recipients only have to pay £57. The present giver has already paid the first £57.
