Hi all

  • The Borders store on Charring Cross Rd has 20% of all books. It has 50% off certain sections including maps, gardening, medical (good for anybody studying nursing etc) and Politics. I popped in yesterday and bought lots of books.

    :rotfl:
    July £10 a day Challenge= £0 / £310
  • I was in our Borders yesterday, and to be quite honest, if their closing down sale prices are anything to go by, I'm not surprised they are going out of business!!

They are offering 20% off books - but that's the RRP, mind - there's no special offers, and discounts they may have had previously are gone now.
Every book I've bought for Christmas was much cheaper in WHSmith's than in Borders' sale. All the cookbooks/celebrity books/tv program books etc much cheaper in WH Smiths (real shop not online) or online. (and this is excluding the vouchers which makes WHS even cheaper)
Granted some sections are reduced by 50%, but in our store that made up a tiny portion of the shop floor, and again some of these books are a similar price elsewhere.

    It's only a game

  • True, if you're only after bestsellers, then go elsewhere.

The 20% applies to everything except concessions (GAME and paperchase I think). The reference and computing sections were pretty battered when I popped in this pm.

Managed to get a map of the world I'd been looking at for £6.49 - 50% off.

I expect the adminstrators will start to cut prices further soon.

felt sorry for all the staff though.
  • I'd echo what the others have said. The 50% off sections were ok but nothing to drive hundreds of miles for. A lot of books they had on 50% off are in 'the works' even cheaper. For example, i bought my mum a book on tai chi last week in the works for £3.99, same book was in the 50% off section for £6 half RRP.
  • Was worried that may be the case

I like Borders I think the buyers seek a good range on topics I have always found exactly what I was looking for no matter how obscure in Borders
Sadly Waterstones I do not find so good

I shall be sad to see them go our Southampton branch was excellent, still saved me a 20 min drive each way and the parking so thank you

Was in Borders Saturday. Plenty of people desperately ripping off stickers saying half-price. Borders used to have good deals 50% off etc. Well now, that book that would have been reduced to £10 is now reduced toa wonderful £16....erm...surely something wrong there.

This wouldn't be the administrators desperately trying to recoup some money for the poor rich share holders would it, at the expense of the customer, not to mention the poor folk that they are making redundant.

Who would have thought it, stupid rich people and dumb managers screwing up peoples lives and us losing a great shop (mainly because of the excellent staff).

Still, no doubt this will all rectify itself when the great British public vote in the Tories...:rotfl:

  • My daughter was able to get some revision guides for half price at the Southampton branch which were very good value. Sorry for the staff there though - the girl who served me seemed really sad about the situation.

"don't it always seem to be you don't know what you've got till it's gone" and other tiresome saws.

Boy are the responses on this thread depressing.

Enjoy your literary nirvana browsing the aisles of Asda and Tesco.

To clarify for the retards* out there who don't read autobiographies of older-than-twenty-somethings who haven't been on reality tv

How often is the NORMAL catalogue available at twenty percent off?

    * replace by politically correct alternative of your choice

    Errm

every day of the week in my local Borders. there were always great offers across the whole spectrum. Even for the Big Brother/ I'm a celeb/ XFactor etc etc.

There are three great sadnesses here. One people losing their jobs. two, the loss of staff that actually give a sh@t and know there stuff (and how often can we say that) and three, a book shop that actually trusts that people have a reading age higher than age 10, hey, maybe that is where they really went wrong.

    Such a shame.
