Anyone with a 3 bed house on British Gas Prepay?

Hi all,

My mum was recently put on a prepay meter. There is an arrangement that the British Gas take some money every week to pay off her debt.

What I'm finding though is that the money doesn't last long at all, and just want to know whether it's normal, or whether there is something wrong with ours. I know everyone has different uses, but I'm trying to get some sort of idea of the cost a week.

The hob is gas and we have central heating. The heating comes on for a couple of hours in the morning, and then from 5pm to about 10 in the evening.

How much do you top up a week?

Thank in Advance

I live in a 3 bed semi with British gas pre pay meters for both gas and electric(they were here when we moved in nearly 5 years ago and BG want £300 to take them out at last phone call

We moved into our house in March, British Gas replaced our pre pay meters free of charge, maybe you should try calling them again if you want them replaced.

I put about £20 a week on plus the money for the debt (run up when my husband was made redundant earlier this year) and we have gas CH and water.

We do live in a big old Victorian house though which is over 4 floors (one is an unheated cellar) and we dont have any double glazing so that may be why ours is a bit higher.

    Hope this helps

Wow. There is something definitely wrong then. Since the meter has been fitted, we've been having a lot of problems with the boiler, the pressure keeps dropping. Also we seem to be putting £5 on every few days, and we have double glazing and a normal top and bottom floor.

Cons I'm going to check out this click tariff and see what a difference it'll make.

Thank you to everyone who has replied.

How much a week are they asking you to pay off the debt?
they may reduce the recovery amount if you are in a hardship situation

Seven hours heating a day is forty nine hours a week or just under two hundred hours a month, that's a fair bit of heating. Maybe try reducing by two lots of half an hour per day, ensuring the heating is going off well before you go to bed or to work? What temperature is the thermostat set at - I think you save 10% for every 1C reduction?

I'm not sure how much my mum is paying as she won't sit down and go through the bills with me so I can sort out a proper budget.

Fire Fox the boiler was installed by some cowboy and there is no thermosat.

No thermostatic valves on each radiator? They are not expensive to install. Otherwise just wear a sweater and turn the heating off a bit more!
