Lens Cleaners

I have tried using a compact disc auto cleaning lens cleaner on a DVD player that stopped working.

Nothing happened after after trying it three times so I assumed there was another problem with the DVD player.

A couple of days ago I tried it again and it worked! I was able to play a few DVD's but today it will not work again:mad:

It appears all these cleaners do is brush the lens using two bits of cloth on the underside of the compact disc.

Does repeated use of the lens cleaner harm the player and is there another way of cleaning the lens without pulling the DVD player apart?

Comments

  • No harm but no good either. Physical clean with a cotton bud, try to find a long stemmed one, then it's a partial strip, removing the players top cover.

You would normally use some cleaning fluid (alcohol) dripped onto the brushes on cleaning disk. Did you get any fluid with it?

Your main problem with hand cleaning a DVD player is gaining access to the laser lens but if you can get to it the fluid which comes with the cleaning disk is the correct stuff to use.

Can you hear the lens moving? (Its on runners). if not there may be some crap stuck in the cogs which drive it (Very common problem). Ive opened up a few dvd and cd players with this problem

    Thanks for the replies.

I got some fluid with the kit but I thought it was only for cleaning dirty CD's and not for use with the lens cleaner. If it doesn't harm the lens I will give it a go!

It's my granddaughters TV/DVD........ this is the one http://www.davidshomegoods.com/furniture/barbie-tv-dvd-combi/prod_4655.html?utm_source=googlebaseUK&utm_medium=CPC&country=GB. I had hoped I could sort it out without taking the case apart. I could hear the lens moving but no doubt there is also some crap in the cogs!

So long as you keep your eyes well away from the actual laser they tend to be quite easy to clean

In fact what might work (And be far easier) is actually disconnect the unit, turn it upside down and sideways and give it a bit of a shake

This one is inside a TV. If that is powered up while being serviced then there are more things to worry about than the laser.

Missed that. I was following the original post that said it was a dvd player. In which case its probably knackered as these cheapo tv/dvd combos dont tend to last long

I was going to mention that smoking tends to gum 'em up until I followed the link and saw what the TV is :)

Yeh. She usually looks after her things but you never know what might have got onto the tray with the DVD!

I have not given up on the lens cleaner though and the next time I am round there I will give it a few goes with the fluid. Otherwise she will just have to put up with the TV alone!
