Hi there, I really hope someone can please help put me in the correct perspective with my dilemna.

I have been homeless for two years and have only recently finally offered (and I have accepted under a week ago) a council bedsit/flat. Previously I was living with my parents before becoming homeless so therefore I have no possessions of my own except a few sets of clothing and some small personal effects. I have sent off a Community Care Grant form less than a week ago for furniture items and things to furbish my new home with. I filled out the form with no help or advice so I am now worried that I may have filled it out incorrectly. In the form I have stated that I have been homeless for two years multiple times in certain areas and that I have no family support wether it be social or financial. There was a section asking me wether I am following a programme due to having an unsettled life or period. Well I am not following a programme but I have been homeless so I skipped that part and decided to state it multiple times in the form. Have I filled this out incorrectly or should it be OK? Will it affect thier decision dramatically?

I thankyou very much for taking your time to read this and hope to hear from someone soon.

edit is this in the wrong part of the forum? i think i might have made a mistake. lol. admin?
I am going to repost it in the benefits section. I hope this is ok. if an admin sees this please can he delete it. thanks.

  • Hi there,
I typed in community care grant on the net and it does mention resettlement into council housing as a criteria. I shouldn,t worry (easy for me to say i,m not waiting) until you get reply because i would imagine you are allowed to appeal). Please appeal if you are unsucessful usually a different decision maker looks into the claim. Also in the mean while see if any welfare rights groups or citizens advice operate in your area. Good luck with your claim and your new accomodation.

  • And appeal if the amount offered is small. In many cases, as someone else looks at the appeal, they tend to do what they can to increase the amount available. It is also possible to claim for a loan from the social fund to increase the overall amount, to cover things that aren't regarded as being quite so essential. But you would need to claim it in addition to the CCG.

Also, there could be a number of organisations in the area that could provide cheap or free furniture, appliances, etc - look for Appliance Reuse Centres, Missionary Marts, ask about MIND's help (if appropriate), etc, etc.

You really need to have floor coverings (carpet/rug), curtains, a bed, bedding, clothes, a kettle, fridge and cooker in order to get through a winter safely. All of those things should be available second hand or very cheap.

    Good luck.

  • Hello there,

You could also place a 'wanted' request on Freecycle.
Just Google freecycle and your local town to find your nearest group.

There are lots of people with spare items, that are willing to gift them to people in need.

You could also check in your area for Furniture projects, also church based groups.

My advice would be to contact your local social work department for advice. I know in my area we are able to put referrals into home start services to get white good packages and furniture. There are also charity applications that can be made for people in circumstances similar to your own.

Good luck in your new home
Thanks for the advice Martin! :money:
