Very slow windows explorer

When I open a "my documents" window to browse files the PC takes a few minutes to open the window. When I click to open a file, the program and file take just as long if not longer to open and the window says "not responding" until the file opens. Often the program opens, then another delay until the file is displayed and sometimes get the message "problem sending command to program".

Lots of files are Excel and Word and I think it may be MS office related although it appears to be the same to a lesser extent with other files too. I have reinstalled MS Office on the off chance that this would fix but with no luck.

I am running XP Home, have 2 hard drives "C" and "D" with many identical files backed up from C to D and opening from a different drive makes no difference.

Rather than going start>my documents, I have just tried navigating to "my documents" folder via desktop>Cdrive>documents and settings>user profile name>my documents and the folders open instantly.

Any ideas?

    Yes, Virgin PC guard
  • If you can put your anti-virus into sleep mode or disable it in some way for one minute then try to open your documents, if they open normally you know where the problem is.

Done that and everything OK when AV off. Switched it back on again and still OK. Rebooted and seems quicker but not as quick as when AV off.

I switched off 5 services - Antivirus, Firewall, Anti-Spyware, Identity Theft Protection and Privacy Manager. I will trial and error to see which setting affects explorer - any ideas which one of these is most likely culprit?
  • More than likely the AV. If you want a workaround solution try this quick launch program http://executor.dk/
