Housing Association property

I have got a 2 bed house and i requested them if they can create a 3rd bedroom. They said you can do this at your own cost or if cant, then you fill in a trasnfer form for a bigger property.

I was wondering if there is any grant scheme or any other alternative way they can support me. Please advice me.

  • There really isn't a way to compel a LL to alter the person size of the property - with a grant or otherwise. And I can't think ofany grants available for this purpose.

Would you consider a transfer or have you looked at mutual exchange?
Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response. :D
  • i am thinking of handing in a transfer form which they have sent
  • Might be the only way to get the space you need.

I'm assuming you're in a 2-bed 4-person. If you can say the sex/age of your household i can tell you what you allocation should be.

  • its me and my wife. My 2 boys (6yrs and 2yrs) and my girl (5yrs). we are expecting our fourth child in Dec 09.
  • Cheers. That's a 3-bed allocation.

Until the baby is 1, he/she won't count as a person (for allocation purposes).

The boys will be expected to share forever.

Your daughter will be expected to share when the baby's 1+ until the age of 10 if the baby is a boy or indefinitely if the baby is girl.

So you'd be entitled to a 3-bed 5-person ( i.e. 2 doubles and a single room) allocation if you aply now.

Do fill in the transfer form. With choice-based lettings - where you bid on a property - you may be able to find somewhere you like and win the bid without having to wait an age. BUT 3-beds are the most required size of property so competition can be fierce.

Have a look into mutual exchange. general link here:

It's a good while since I've dealt with this but if I remember rightly, you may be able to swap to a property size 1 bedroom greater than your immediate needs.

    Good luck :)
