Credit Checks- Renting

  • Hey all thanks for the replies,
I have been in touch with the ICO and they have confimed that this is not good practice (illegal). Also I have checked my credit report with Experian as I have a membership with them. They have no ccj just that default from 2004. Also no search had been made on the report. But I was advised to get my report from the other 2 companies just to be 100% sure.
If a search has been made then I will write to the person/company whom performed the search and inform them that they did not have permission to do so and I will be informing the ICO about there actions.
I am also sending an email to the woman explaining my concerns and actions as I found out today she has been telling my wifes parents that I have ccj's etc.

I would guess that your verbal agreement that you are interested in the house is enough grounds to carry out credit checks on prospective tenants.

You could think about it in the other light,

What if you went for this house and was told 2 weeks later that you could not rent it. By her making the first move, she has already vetted yourself and can let you know sooner than later.

Renting houses is a business and should be treated like such.

(I'm going to be a new landlord, and know that my tenats will fail a credit check. They probably have more CCJ's than i have pairs of socks, but i'll still rent to them)
