Advice needed in connecting racing wheel

Hello all, Iam trying to set up a sidewinder racing wheel on my Dell 5150. Wheel needs a socket that will take the nine pins on the plug, and the dell doesn't have this  .
Am I on the right lines in thinking that I need to install a separate sound card as this dell only has on board sound? On my old Advent there was on the back the correct socket that had the words 'game & midi' on the metal plate where things like speakers were also plugged in. Do you get adapters/converters??????? Or am I completely on the wrong track with this, and if so perhaps the more savvy of you techies can point me in the right direction.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
