Took my numberplate - no accident though?!

Hi all,

Hope someone can help, I have a feeling this is not a big deal but my other half is a worry wort and now fretting - can anyone advise if we need to be bothered about this?

I was sat a junction earlier behind a driver who went to pull out and then obviously decided against it, so I braked, as did he, and he then got out of his car. The gentleman (I say this as he was elderly and I did try to be polite - I'd already given way to him when he went the wrong way out of the carpark) then proceeded to inspect his rear bumper as if I'd hit him.

I got out and took a look, saw that I'd stopped about 4 inches behind him, there was no contact, and went to get back in my car. He then called me back saying he wanted my details as it was a mobility car and not his (?) and he wanted to get it checked out for structural damage. I then pointed out I hadn't actually even touched his car(!) to which he kept insisting "but we might not be able to see it". I insisted there was nothing wrong with either car, there couldn't be (he said he felt something, I'm guessing he must have felt his brakes!). I backed up to give him a better look, at which point he got his wife to take down my numberplate. I then wrote down my mobile number (just to placate him and so I could get away).

My other half said I should just have driven off, and I admit I was too nice about it, but now he's worrying we're going to get scammed - what does anyone else think? I personally thought it was a mountain out of nothing, not even a molehill, but am i wrong? Any thoughts would be great.

  • Don't worry about it. If you do get contacted by his insurance company (don't talk to anyone but them about it), explain exactly what happened as you see it and they will review. They are experienced in this kind of thing and will resolve it.

I suspect it won't even come to that though. If you had just driven away, you might have caused more problems for yourself.

Thanks all, my other half did actually write down his numberplate whilst I was talking to them, but I've just read him these comments and it's great to hear. Officer_Dibble, I will defintely take those pics tomorrow, brilliant idea.

He probably braked hard and felt the ABS kicking in and thought it was a bump.
