How can I identify where pics are?

Yesterday, I transferred all my photographs from "My pictures" and Picasa3 to my external hard drive and yes, this opened up space. I have to say it seemed strange with thousands of pics gone.
Today I removed Picasa3 from the system and then reinstalled it, just to see if the layout was any different and in any case, I will want it again soon.
Once it was on, I was invited to allow it to search for any photo's (hidden) on the system and didn't expect to find any.
BUT.as I speak, it is finding all those that were supposidly removed yesterday.
So, maybe someone has an explanation and once I have it, maybe someone would tell me how I can ensure they can be removed completley.
I'l be more than happy if the space created yesterday can be repeated, after all they are only 40 odd years of family pics saved and now they are on the extrenal hard drive, there is no need for them to be here.

Was it not just picking them up from the external hardrive?:idea:0

I am certainly learing something today. No, it is not picking them upo from the extrenal hard drive as today I am away from home and have brought my laptop with me and am using my daughters dongle.
Not only did picasa3 find the 4000 plus pics, but found them in duplicate.
So far I have done this:- honed in on one or two pics and rt clicked and noted which drive they were on and found them. It is my belief that when my laptop was reverted back to factory settings, somehow they had been saved and then reinstalled elsewhere, so that I didn't loose them. I've now removed them all from the d/drive and uninstalled picasa3 again, so I'm assuming they've gone now.
Later I will install picasa3 again and see if it finds them once again. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Plug your external drive into another computer and make sure they are on there.0
