Getting a credit card - imperfect credit

Hi all,
I've got a Natwest credit card charging 15.9% from my student days, and a capital one which is at a horrendous 29.9% (holiday, again from my student days).
I'm now employed and am slowly starting to pay them off, but as you might imagine the interest costs are painful. Having only just house, and having only been in my job since January (along with a few missed payments) I have doubts that I'd get a low-rate credit card.
There must be thousands in my position - stuck on high rate plastic, taking ages to pay it back because of the interest costs. Any advice anyone? Has anyone been in a similar situation?
I got my credit report from equifax and it was 389 - 'fair'
Cheers!

It's not only credit scoring they take into consideration. I have a credit card with Natwest with a high apr but because they don't report my account history to the CRA's I had a low credit score. However, I score highly on other factor's eg. income, postcode, occupation etc so I've just been accepted for credit cards with Virgin (mbna) and Egg with their 0% offers.0
