how late in the day can a refund on an unused flight ticket be claimed?

back in sept 2006 i had to fly to italy for work and the company bought me a ticket. a query about my passport meant my outward journey was delayed by a day and i wasn't sure my original ticket would be valid so i bought a one way business ticket on the same flight as back up (the business flight guaranteed a full refund if unused). the company let me use the original ticket for the flight out so i was planning to get a refund... however, i lost the ticket during a house move and only found it earlier this year, nearly 3 years after it was purchased. lastminute say i haven't a leg to stand on as refunds are only available for 13 months. does anyone have another suggestion as to how i might proceed, as we're talking about nearly £400.00 here... come on, martin or his learned followers, lead me into the light!
