Borders Gift Card - Advice Needed

It's a book shop
.
Yes but my point was the OP may have been given the voucher/card as a gift and may not usually choose to shop there or in a shop with such limited products. And I felt your comment was plain rude, implying the other person was complaining for the sake of it. For a forum designed to help others there is a lot of hostility here with stupid people picking at the topic-starter, finding anything they can to moan at the OP for posting their original topic.0 -
If you get a gift voucher you don't want or like above, you can do what i do.
Go to the store, look for a customer with an arm full of books and say "i got this voucher and don't really read books can i pay for your things and have the cash from you, i will wait with you until you have paid to re-assure that its genuine".
some say no, some want a deal, but it always works, you just have to be brave and ask ,but always be polite0 -

Sometimes it happens but its unlikely. Plus I think its past the buying out stage now, all the stores are closing and some selected stores are getting bought but to become different stores.0 -
Am a little shocked that Threshers are going down too! I'd have thought that both Threshers and Boarders occupied a large chunk of the market- Boarders were the main company to compete against Waterstones so unless Foyals can up their game (which I don't think they will do) I would have thought someone would buy them out- even if it just stays to being online. Same with Threshers- aside from supermarket wines, I can't think of any live-wine/booze shops (pubs don't count!)
Hope you all get some type of compensation/money back.0 -
my boyfriends mam is having the same problem, we are choosing our xmas prezzies from borders so she can make use of the card. i think its a case that, no usual business rules apply when they are in administration, they need cash, not to pay more smaller debts to customers, so they do not have to honour a gift voucher at all.It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'

Just to clarify, all Creditors are treated in the same way - small or large, and the rules of Administrations are actually quite strict.
You may be suprised to learn, but often the Government are the largest creditors in these situations, because of outstanding VAT and payroll Income Tax / NI.
You will all be entitled to the same percentage payout (eg 10p in the pound owed), IF there is any money left worth distributing.
It would seem that Borders are actually taking an unusual but softer approach, by allowing 50% of the voucher value. Legally, now they are in Administration, they do not have to honour them at all.
Unfortunately, Threshers are not taking the same view.
A lesson to learn in the current economic climate - do NOT give or ask for Gift Vouchers, you just don't know what will happen by the time you get to use them. If you do get them spend them ASAP, and don't hold onto them. If you must give them, buy them at the last minute.0 -

Hi
I know it's not much help but I think you can spend £30 on books in Borders & they will take £15 off your gift card. You still only get 50% of the card's value but you don't have to spend an extra £30 if that makes sense?
I would make use of it sooner rather than later - I won't be surprised if the administrators stop accepting them completely in the next week or so - they aren't under any obligation to accept them , as other posters have mentioned.
Plus if you spend it wisely you may be able to make your money back by flogging them on amazon (if you avoid the bestsellers that only go for a 1p)0
