    You will get a book and technical support with the Non OEM version. With the OEM version you will just get a disk and you might have to buy a token bit of hardware eg. a cable or a fan.
    I would buy a hard disk so I could try the operating system out on the new disk without trashing what I already had. ( Check the max size of disk your mother board can support if it is a few years old).  

    The long awaited Service pack 2 for XP is out for some over the weekend. I predict slow downloads.

    Home addition stops working after 3 years. You need to get a creidt card out to reactovate it after 3 years. Check with Mircosoft Customer support.

    LOL. Lets all set our clocks to 2009, then sue microsoft when we can't switch our PCs on again.
    Strangely, I've never heard of this one before, I wonder where that started.

    Hi - I think the answer to the origianl question is that the cheaper version is an upgrade from Windows 98/ME, whereas the more expensive one is for those who do not have an earlier windows version on their PC.
