Non-contract mobile dongle?

I've really had enough of the "internet" we have in halls. It's 512kbps and hardly ever lets me connect to the internet. If it does, it works for about 20 minutes.
The helpline is useless - it's open Monday-Friday 9-5pm and I always have problems outside those times. And it's an 0845 number.
Can anyone recommend a pay monthly mobile internet package that doesn't invovle being tied to a contract please? I mean like with the Vodafone freedom packs, where you pay £x per month and get a certain amount of minutes and texts - if you don't top up, you don't get it and there's no being tied to a contract.

A good start would be to look at the coverage maps on the different networks websites - if you can't get 3G then it's a non starter, so may narrow it down some.0

3 used to have offers from time to time where you could get a free PAYG dongle out of them.... hard to tell who might be most suitable without knowing

isn't a bad offer. Yes it is £80 up front but it will last a year if you don't go over 1GB of allowance every 30 days. It is the equivalent of the £10 a month on normal PAYG but for £6.67. If you go with other providers your say £20 for the dongle, and then £10-£15 a month so £140 for the year minimum.
The main thing is check for coverage as already mentioned other wise a waste of money.
Another option is http://threestore.three.co.uk/payg/dealsummary.aspx?offercode=DSLPP499&=1403
It is PAYG and can be used to connect other wifi devices, so you could share it with room mates and share the cost. Also you should be able to use things like an iPod touch with it too

Be careful, the usage allowances are generally quite low and the charges high if you go over them. If you want it mainly for checking emails and perhaps doing a bit of research when you can't get your normal connection, great. If you want to download files, use itunes, etc, forget it!0
