Moving a window

Options
I am thinking of getting an extension which would add 7' to our house. I will then get an internal wall moved to share the 7' between two bedrooms. The problem is I can only move the wall by 15" because of a window. Just curiosity at present but how much would it cost to move the window by 12", the window is 65" by 45".My guess is it is not worth bothering the builder with the idea.

It would be almost as much work to move the window a small distance as it would to move it a greater distance. To move it at all will require the lintel to be moved. In addition there will be a need for more facing bricks. You are unlikely to be able to recover enough from the side being cut away to rebuild the other side that will require building up. No doubt the builder could do it, but I can't imagine it would be cheap.
Another thought would be to reduce the size of the window by say 12". This would provide the required 12" wall length. It could be done without having to remove the lintel and would be a lot less work.

Thanks for pointing out my stupidity, the idea of a smaller window never crossed my mind. I am now much happier with that idea. So either move the wall 15" or get a smaller window. Currently I will end up with a 9'10"x14'6" and 9'10"x9'3" so reducing the window size by 12" would give me 9'10"x13'6" and 9'10"x10'3".

    Thanks again.

I did not think that you were stupid. I was working out how this problem could be solved by moving the window, when it suddenly occurred to me that a smaller window might well be the answer. Best of luck if you go ahead.

Next question, I went on an online estimator for a 2.18M by 4.22M two story extension and they quoted Budget £14,178, Standard £18,905 & Delux £23,631. Does anyone know what the difference between Budget, Standard & Delux is and are these fair numbers. I can afford all 3 but was budgeting on £20K.

Makes more sense to go to actual contractors for a quote. There is no way that the estimation site can take into account possible problems that can occur. It needs someone on the ground to sus out any likely problems. An estimator site is only going to give a vague idea of the costs I would think.

I just want an idea as to what I might be getting in to before I get a builder to waste a couple of hours of his time driving out and finding I had no chance of affording what I need. With the bit of research I have done I think the cost should be around £20K for a 2 story 9 square meter extension. I now just need to make sure I understand what I should be asking when he visits on Wednesday.

Is there a list of question I should ask.
